Recently, Lee BIA Builders Care and community partners provided life-changing bathroom renovations for a very special family in Lehigh Acres.
Erica Coloma, 43, was a successful accountant with a very bright future. In 2002, she suffered an almost fatal car accident at the young age of 24, leaving her permanently disabled. She now has paraplegia and has lost nearly all her ability to communicate. Shortly after the accident, Erica’s parents decided to move Erica to Southwest Florida, as they felt the warmer weather would help with her lifelong recovery.
The Coloma family have since settled into their Lehigh Acres home and have become Erica’s primary caretakers. Over the past several years, she has slowly improved her cognitive skills and continues to stay positive. While these are huge strides, the severe brain damage she suffered will never allow her to function independently again. Despite the hardship, Carlos and Maria continued to put forth their efforts to make whatever modifications necessary for the health and safety of their daughter.
While some accommodations in the home provide benefits for Erica, the design of the bathroom was not easily accessible. Erica’s parents would struggle to get her in and out of the shower to bathe. Over the years, it had become increasingly challenging for them to lift her in and out of the shower, creating unsafe conditions for all.
After learning about this family, Charles Perry Partners, Inc., RDR Construction, Plumbing Solutions of SWFL, Nilles Design Group, and Wayne Wiles Floor Coverings quickly coordinated efforts to provide a more safe and accessible bathroom for this family.
In just a matter of weeks, they were able to transform the bathroom by removing portions of existing walls and shower lip. In addition, new tile and plumbing fixtures were installed and the existing doorway was widened to allow safer accessibility for Erica and her parents. All work was provided at no cost to the homeowner, thanks to the generosity of these community partners.
These accommodations are truly a blessing and will significantly improve the health, safety, and well-being for the entire Coloma Family.
A very special THANK YOU to Charles Perry Partners, Inc., RDR Construction, Plumbing Solutions of SWFL, Nilles Design Group, and Wayne Wiles Floor Coverings for their generosity in making these life-changing renovations possible.
