Recently, Lee BIA Builders Care and community partners provided a life-changing bathroom modification for a disabled amputee in Fort Myers.
Betty Love, 85, has lived in her Fort Myers home for over 43 years.
In August 2019, her right leg was amputated due to health complications. Since then, it has been difficult to maneuver around her home, especially her only bathroom. The home was built in the 60’s, and the narrow halls and doorways simply did not accommodate her wheelchair. Unfortunately, Betty’s limited income did not allow her to afford any type of necessary modifications. These unexpected circumstances left Betty with the inability to use her bathroom or safely access areas throughout the home. As a result, her 53-year-old daughter Tamara, became her caretaker and assisted her mother with sponge bathing and daily activities.
Left without options, Betty soon faced the reality that she may never be able to live independently or feel the warmth of a shower again. It was clear the need for an accessible bathroom was critical for her health and safety.
Despite these hardships, Betty’s passion and zest for life only grew stronger. She continued to stay positive and find happiness in the simplest of things such as listening to music, laughter, time with good friends, and simply being present. Things we can all take for granted from time to time.
After learning of Betty’s situation, Beattie Development, Mike Carroll, Cape Coral Plumbing and Wayne Wiles Floor Coverings stepped in to provide Betty with the life-changing gift of an accessible bathroom. In just under 2 weeks, they converted her bathtub into a beautiful roll-in shower equipped with grab bars and a transfer bench. They also provided a vanity, new tile, and widened the door to maximize accessibility.
In addition, two portable ramps were installed within the home to allow safer access to certain areas. All renovations were provided at no cost to the homeowner.
Special thank you to Beattie Development, Mike Carroll, Cape Coral Plumbing, Wayne Wiles Floor Coverings as well as our Rock Star Volunteer Adam Beiter for installing the portable ramps! Betty Love is forever grateful and will never forget each and every one of you for making her life so much easier.
