Today, Builders Care Staff and community partners marched down the street to surprise a Cape Coral homeowner, Robert Ryan, with the gift of a brand new Air Conditioning Unit. The Guardian Angels of this project, Lead Mechanical Services, Ferguson Enterprises and American Standard, immediately stepped in when learning about Robert Ryan’s story:
Robert Ryan, age 43, was in a terrible motorcycle accident in 2001. The near-death accident left him a quadriplegic without any hope of walking or living a normal lifestyle again. He cannot use his limbs and experiences constant muscle spasms due to the nerve damage caused from the accident. Despite his ailments, Robert lives alone in his Cape Coral home and tries to remain as self-sufficient as possible. Fortunately, his mother lives nearby and provides care and assistance.
The bathrooms in the home are difficult for Ryan to maneuver his wheelchair. He often gets stuck using the toilet and has not been able to use his shower for over 12 years. He currently relies on help from his mother to sponge bathe himself. The warm water of a normal shower would provide therapeutic benefits and help to relax his muscles. In addition, the ability to bathe himself alone would provide much needed privacy and humility for Ryan. As anyone can imagine, a roll-in shower for Robert’s home would be life-changing for him.
Recently, Robert’s air conditioning system in the home quit working and addressing the HVAC system became of upmost importance. Robert cannot make it through a hot Florida summer without air conditioning in his home.
Lead Mechanical Services and Ferguson Enterprises are not only covering all of the labor expenses, but they have partnered with American Standard to cover the material expenses as well. What an amazing gift and a true angels to this family and community!
A very special thank you to Lead Mechanical Services, Ferguson Enterprises and American Standard for stepping in to help Robert Ryan. Your immediate response to this story with an outstanding YES exemplifies a true act of caring and Robert Ryan and his family are so very grateful.
But our work is not done yet! Robert Ryan is still in urgent need of a bathroom modification. Builders Care is desperately seeking a community partner to step in and provide him with a comfortable and accessible bathroom.
