With tools instead of toys, Roof Smart provides ultimate Christmas wish

Lee Builders Care

“Christmas is most truly Christmas when we celebrate it by giving the light of love to those who need it most.”

Due to financial constraints and medical bills, more than 40 homeowners are seeking support from Builders Care, and are currently waiting for roof replacements in Lee County. In response to asking building partners and businesses to assist them in helping local homeowners, Roof Smart of Southwest Florida partnered with Builders Care to provide a new roof for one of these families in need right before Christmas. This is the fourth roof that Roof Smart has performed for needy families in Lee County since last Christmas.

“The community has been very good to us and we want to be good to others,” said Peter Simeone, co-owner of Roof Smart of Southwest Florida.  “This is what the season is all about.”

Clint and Michele McLean have lived in their Ft. Myers home for 27 years.  They have enjoyed bringing up three boys in that home over the years.  One of their sons, Jordan, was born prematurely at only 1 lb. leading to developmental issues.  Now, 27 years old, Jordan, is not able to work or live independently.  Clinton, now 63, and Michelle, now 61, have also had their own share of challenges.  Most recently, Clinton was diagnosed with Lung Cancer after a long employment with Tires Plus.  Michele used to work in graphic design before being laid off 3 years ago and now works part-time in retail.  For a long-time, the McLean family could not afford a vehicle and Michelle would walk 2 miles to and from work for each shift.

“I cannot believe it,” said homeowner Michele McLean holding back the tears. “We have worried so much about this house.  Thank you so much.”

Roof Smart of Southwest Florida provided the labor and materials to complete the roof replacements and Lee Drywall donated drywall work in the home to cover up gaping holes in the ceiling.  Roof replacement services are valued at $8,000. All services and products were provided by the companies at no charge to the homeowner.

Given recent weather conditions, Builders Care has received an increase in the number of roof repair requests and is currently seeking additional support from additional businesses. Businesses who wish to provide materials, services or financial support can contact Heidi Taulman, executive director, Lee BIA Builders Care.

“Roof repairs and replacements are one of the most common requests that come into our office. Rain totals over the past year have increased and so we have seen an increase in roof requests,” said Taulman. “The team at Roof Smart of Southwest Florida have relieved major stress off of a family that will be appreciated for many years to come.”
