A hardworking son and family man, Troy Elliott was a full-time glass worker as well as a caregiver for his ailing mother who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Then in December 2012, Elliott suffered a stroke in the backyard of his mother’s home where he laid unconscious for three days before he was found. Elliott suffered major trauma to the nerves of the brain and spent more than two months in intensive care fighting for his life. Upon release from the hospital, Elliott required 24-hour care and was diagnosed legally blind as a result of brain damage that could not be repaired. With support from his tight-knit family, Elliott’s sister Vonda Behnke left her career in Missouri to move to Fort Myers to care for her brother.
Prior to his stroke, Elliott maintained his mother’s home on a regular basis. Since then, the house was deteriorating inlcuding a leaking roof and wood rot surrounding the exterior. In addition, lack of a handicap-accessible bathroom has been a challenge for Elliott.
Behnke reached out to friends and family who have provided assistance including starting the bathroom renovation, helping to re-roof the house and more. Currently, the house poses safety concerns with limited flooring and no bathroom accessibility for Elliott.
To improve safety and allow Elliott to become more independent, volunteers will rebuild the existing home including bathroom and kitchen. The project is expected to be completed on Dec. 12, in time for the family to spend Christmas in their newly renovated home. The project kicked off on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. with a short rally and the demolition of the bathroom and kitchen. The project will wrap up eight days later on Friday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. with the unveiling of the newly renovated home.
