Regina had never been able to ever use her scooter outside of her home. That was until she was approved for a new wheelchair accessible ramp by Lee BIA Builders Care in partnership with Center for Independent Living of the Gulfcoast. Regina has a very long driveway. “You don’t realize how long of a walk that is. I have to take a break once I reach the mailbox before I can walk all the way back in,” she said.
Regina suffers with many ailments including Cerebrovascular Disease and Diabetes and has a difficult time walking long distances. Regina says it is hard on her not to have any mobility or a vehicle to help herself remain independent. When asked about her new found freedom, she said, “Oh it is so nice to be able to go and do something when you want to do it and not rely on someone else.”
Builders Care partners and volunteers worked more than 177 hours over 5 days to complete the 41′ ramp with two landings, stairs and handrail. The value of construction, materials and permits is more than $5,000.
Recently, a donation of tools by local companies made the process for volunteers just a little easier. Tools including power drills and a generator help local volunteers give back.
Special thanks to our Ramps Up! community partners! Making a difference, one life-changing gift at a time.
