As a student at FGCU, I had the opportunity to learn about Builders Care and the awesome things that they do for this community. I knew that I really wanted to be a part of this organization and jumped at the chance to be an intern for Builders Care. When Heidi and Olivia asked me if I could be there when they “surprised” the Meagher family with their home makeover, I immediately said YES! I was not prepared for how emotional this experience turned out to be for me. Next time, I am bringing some tissues with me! It was a pleasure to meet the family, too. I was able to keep my emotions in check until Heidi told them what Builders Care was going to do for this family. Watching Teresa’s face crumple up in tears when they learned about the all that they were to receive was overwhelming to say the least. This included new appliances, cabinets and plumbing, along with the stay at the Weston Resort and the boarding of their four dogs. This family is going through so much and you could literally see the weight being lifted off of her shoulders. I think it is awesome that people come together like this to help their neighbors in need.
I was fortunate enough to be able to volunteer on this project as well as take part in the reveal of the newly renovated home 17 short days later. Seeing the community come together to help a family in need was awe-inspiring and I look forward to many more of these life-changing experiences with Builders Care.
I am looking forward to the next one. I will be easy to find. I will be the one with a big box of Kleenex in my hand.
More than 30 volunteers joined me (left) to help paint the interior and exterior of the Meagher family home in under 2 days.
