Letter to the Editor highlights recent Meagher family project

Lee Builders Care

On July 3, The Cape Coral Daily Breeze printed the following letter to the editor by Butch Ritter on behalf of Builders Care. The letter recognizes everything that was done, along with everyone who participated, with the recent renovation of the Meagher home.

To the editor:

As the construction industry continues to improve, Builders Care, the non-profit arm of the Lee Building Industry Association remains steadfast in its dedication to supporting homeowners with much-needed repairs and renovations. Since 2005, local builders and service providers have donated their time, money, materials and labor to renovate homes for residents in need in Southwest Florida, totaling more than $2.4 million in services.

Although Team Aubuchon has supported Builders Care financially for nearly 10 years through their annual Helping Hands for the Holidays fundraiser, last month, Team Aubuchon took on its first comprehensive Builders Care project. The entire company has been involved in making a difference in the lives of a family in need, the Meagher family.

For months, the Cape Coral veteran and her family, were forced to use the facilities at a gas station up the street because their plumbing had completely failed. Then a fire destroyed the kitchen and caused smoke damage throughout the house. However, most challenging for the family has been their health issues. Teresa’s husband Mike, a retired juvenile officer from the state of Florida, fought cancer five years ago. Now, Teresa is battling a rare bone cancer. The couple’s 18-year-old son also suffers with medical issues. Despite these trials, the family tried to manage the repairs on their own. That’s when Builders Care and our partners stepped in to help.

Through its Community Impact Grants Program, The Home Depot Foundation awarded $5,000 to assist in funding the renovations, joining Team Aubuchon and other Builders Care partners to help the family. Together, we recently surprised the Meagher family with news that their prayers were being answered. Not only was the family of five going to get new plumbing, but the building partners announced that the project would include a brand new kitchen and flooring, as well as other surprises to improve safety in the home. To make it happen, Builders Care mobilized more than 30 local companies to join them in getting the job done.

Please join me in giving thanks to Team Aubuchon and the many companies and organizations that have joined together to help our neighbors. They are the heroes of this community. The Meagher family would still be using the restroom facilities at the gas station and showering in a makeshift garage shower had it not been for our community partners. Way to go, Team Aubuchon, Home Depot and all our Builders Care partners – you are truly making a difference in Southwest Florida.
