BIA Builders Care begins life-changing gift

Lee Builders Care

Today, volunteers from Builders Care and the Lee BIA, along with the Center for Independent Living Gulf Coast began construction on a life-changing gift for a Lehigh Acres man and wife.  Mark and Kim had no idea how their lives would change in just a few months after Mark stepped on a nail.  That day lead to a bone infection in his foot that has lasted more than 3 years and caused several trips to the hospital and now Mark will be losing at a minimum his foot and possibly his entire leg.  Mark has had Diabetes since the age of 30 and now suffers from neuropathy in his limbs which complicates his issues.  Mark has nearly died a dozen times due to complications with Diabetic comas.  At 44 years young, Mark and his wife, Kim have been through so much. This situation with Mark has placed tremendous hardship on this once working and thriving family.  Their daughter wants to help so badly, she offered her tax return to help renovate the bathroom for them.

In just a few days, Mark and Kim will have a newly constructed 50’ ramp with two landings in order to help make mobility easier.  Currently, Kim takes Mark’s wheelchair apart to carry it down the stairs because it is too heavy to lift.  Special thanks to Lee Building Industry Association, Center for Independent Living Gulfcoast, Nilles Design Group, Gulfcoast Engineering, West Coast Structural Concrete & Masonry and our many volunteers.
